Mufti Morality – Death to Cable-Viewers

Posted in Edger by Skepdude on September 13, 2008

Sheikh Salih Ibn al-Luhaydan is of the highest order of mullahs in Saudi Arabia. A recent report from BBC Newsstates:

The most senior judge in Saudi Arabia [al-Luhaydan] has said it is permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV channels which broadcast immoral programmes.

Some of you may know, the fasting month began recently. The month is called Ramadahn (not be confused with my antagonist Tariq Radaman). All forms of luxury are restricted or reduced greatly. This is a month when various questions are asked of mufti’s (judges). Recently it was brought to al-Luhaydan’s attention that women wore very little on satelittle television stations! (Yes, I can see you gasping in shock!)

Prostitution or Capitalism? Virginity on the Auction Block

Posted in Left Coast Librul by Skepdude on September 13, 2008

This week, a 22 year old student in San Diego is auctioning her virginity. Predictably, it has sparked a firestorm on teh intarweb regarding morality.

“Maybe this is the conservative in me coming out, but this seems so wrong,” wrote one blogger, Mike. “Isn’t this prostitution?”

“I must say I feel sad for the future of our society,” said Mike from Montclair State University in New Jersey.

Is it prostitution? Yes. Yes, it is. Rather predictably, it doesn’t bother me. Here’s the thing: prostitution should never have been a crime. Women (and men) are offering services for money. Some people are willing to pay for those services. The fact of the matter is….it’s their bodies. They’re the only ones who should have a say as to whether they sell it or not. I do wonder if there would be quite the black market trade for sex slaves were prostitution legal.

20 years’ jail for errors in Koran translation

Posted in Muslims Against Sharia by Skepdude on September 13, 2008

An Afghan court has sentenced an ex-journalist and a mullah to 20 years in prison each for publishing a translation of the Koran alleged to contain errors, friends and media rights groups said today.

Afghan and international media rights organisations condemned the sentences handed down yesterday and called on President Hamid Karzai to intervene.

Former journalist Ahmed Ghous Zalmai was arrested in November trying to escape into Pakistan as religious clerics and parliament were in an uproar about a Dari-language version of the Muslim holy book he had published.

Exclusive: Honor Killings in Islam

Posted in News by Skepdude on September 13, 2008

Sandela Kanwal wanted a divorce for unknown reasons. Maybe her husband in Chicago was a wife-beater. Maybe she just didn’t like him. We don’t know. For months, she had been trying to get her father to end her unhappy marriage and in July of 2008, Sandela tried again. This time, Chaudhry Rashad strangled his daughter to death. When the police arrived he stated that he did nothing wrong and later demanded that he be provided halal food while in jail.

What kind of an ideology causes a man to show no remorse for murdering his own daughter, but rants and raves at being served ham sandwiches while in prison? The media picked up the story quickly and asked if Islam was to blame.

Atheist Threatens Two Christian Women?

Posted in Friendly Atheist by Skepdude on September 13, 2008

If this is accurate (and I can’t seem to find other references to the case), we should all be utterly disgusted.

A man is now facing charges of Felony Menacing after police say he threatened to cut off the heads of two women because they were Christians.

The encounter happened at 711 Tia Juana around three o’clock in the morning Friday. Police say Russell Bowman, who claims to be an atheist, had made the threat on September 8th.

Hackers attack Large Hadron Collider

Posted in News by Skepdude on September 13, 2008

Hackers have mounted an attack on the Large Hadron Collider, raising concerns about the security of the biggest experiment in the world as it passes an important new milestone.

Now it has emerged that, as the first particles were circulating in the machine near Geneva, a Greek group had hacked into the facility and displayed a page with the headline “GST: Greek Security Team.”

The people responsible signed off: “We are 2600 – dont mess with us. (sic)”
