Tong Ren and the Magic Magnetic Hammer of Healing

Posted in The Quackometer by Skepdude on February 2, 2009

have got to share this with you. The fabulously bonkers web site What Doctors Don’t Tell You has a news report about a breakthrough in acupuncture with a story entitled,  “New therapy helps cancer patients”.

They say,

A new form of acupuncture is dramatically improving the quality of life of patients suffering from a range of diseases, including cancer, anxiety and autoimmune diseases, according to a new study.

The therapy, Tong Ren, has been pioneered in the USA since 2001 by Tom Tam, an acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner.  He has used it to treat patients suffering from cancer, diabetes, AIDS, arthritis, anxiety and depression.

Researchers from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine have tracked the health of 265 patients after weekly sessions of Tong Ren.  Around a third noted improved quality of life, and with no adverse effects.  ‘Substantial’ improvements were noted by 63 per cent of patients suffering anxiety, and 60 per cent of cancer patients.

Although the survey is based on subjective and anecdotal evidence, the researchers say the results warrant further research into Tong Ren.

Yet another thing that our Doctors are not telling us. Is acupuncture really curing cancer and other serious diseases? It had to be worth a little checking. I wonder if Lynne McTaggart of WDDTY did any checking on this too? This is what I found out.

Tom Tam is so disappointed. We should be #1 on the quackometer list if not the top 10. If were at least top 10 orac can get some sleep.

How can we apply to be put into the “Top Ten List” of your Quackometer? Can we donate to you? Then, you could make us #1 on your list!

You’re already under review. Keep it up!

    Is there a membership fee?

Are you the board member to review? Please, not #2,
only #1! Even if you’re vodoo, you have to be the chief. Thanks for all your help and consideration.

How about yourself, Mr. Randi. Do you do any checking on Tong Ren, or you have joined the Tong Ren class? How you know Tong Ren is voodoo and not work? Objective or subjective? Or you have a psychic power to know without obseved!

    Mr. Randi???

    Dear Mr. Skepdude,
You sound like a rational, common-sensed, no vitriol, no profanity, open-minded skeptic–that is, in your critiques you articulate what I most admire in true scientists. True scientists are rational empiricists: they have a devotion to observing reality and are often highly motivated to study its conundrums in a hands-on, experiment-based milieu, with measures that are replicable. Since the history of science is built through repeated experiments, would you consider coming to Boston and conduct multiple empirical observations of our Guinea Pig classes? Then, in the true scientific spirit of unbiased research you could draw informed decisions on the efficacy of Tong Ren based on your own direct study of the class, case studies, and clinical outcomes. I am sure that somehow we could finance this fact-finding trip of yours if you are interested; I think it would be a great service on your part to the Web-based skeptic community. Sincerely, Eleanor Marks

    Eleanor,

Let’s do this properly. Real science does not work this way: You make a claim and others have to scurry about to verify or deny your claim; nope that’s not how it works. You make the claims, you produce the evidence.

You must already have the evidence to show the efficacy of your method. As such, especially since you mention true scientists and rational empiricists, I conclude that you must have conducted your own studies, since you think this stuff works. Why don’t you e-mail me the PDFs at my e-mail address at thoushallthink@gmail.com?

I promise to review all the studies you forward to me with an open mind. Furthermore, I will get my scientist bodies to review them and we’ll take it from there. If there is any truth to this thing, I really am interested in knowing.

PS: You may have heard about the Million Dollar Challenge. I am sure, your Tong Ren qualifies. You should contact the JREF and make money as opposed to spending money on my trip to Boston.

“Nothing shocks me. I am a scientist.”

It really shocks us when you call yourself a scientist. A real scientist needs knowledge gleaned from observation and investigation. Your voodoo knowledge comes only from books, never from practice. Our voodoo knowledge is from practical experience and healing and not from your books. How can you prove that we are some kind of quackery and woo? We don’t mind what you and your people call us. You win, but you can never change our minds.

Science can prove that some things work, yet it can also prove that some things will never work. We will never question whether Tong Ren works from the perspective of your type of double standard study; your double- blind test – you’re too blind to see and never willing to see the potential benefit. Your subjective study makes all of us laugh as we do when we watch and enjoy Benny Hill’s jokes. If you don’t mind, we need your help. Can you prove that Tong Ren does not work using your objective scientific evidence? We would like humbly to hear and review your evidence. Or we can hire you to do the research to prove that Tong Ren does not work, as our evidence.

We feel very sorry that Well Known Academic Institutions spend a lot of money on these objective studies. Instead, they should follow your way and look at science as subjective research. We do not need new knowledge; we only need the old knowledge to support your belief system based on your own imagination. You sound like a Jungian who knows the concept of collective unconsciousness so well. We have a whole group of Jungian analysts who would like to study with you and join your group, if you don’t mind. To prove they know nothing about Carl Jung’s theory.

We like your attack and so called criticisms, because you are from the UK which means that we are well known internationally. Let us tell you one thing; we have some students in the UK already. Soon Tong Ren’s John Bull will change the whole world as well. We feel sorry for you. They will keep you busy arguing and you can become angry with them.

We would like all of the skeptics to pay attention to us. It is the way and time to change the world and become more popular. Thanks for your attention and hard work. We have the same goal; to make Tong Ren famous and well known in UK and throughout the world. Hope that someday Tong Ren will be a required course offered in your famous academic institutions. This is the way of the future; to heal more people who are suffering from their hopeless diseases.

Today is Darwin’s birthday. This brilliant English scientist’s greatest achievement is from tireless observation and research. How about you guys? Just steal the name from science and attack other scientific studies with your own limited knowledge. Shame, to associate Darwin’s name with you as an Englishman. If we follow your isolationist ways, without observation and investigation, healing will have no future, no evolution. Tong Ren is the evolution of healing from chemical and surgical medicine into energy and mind power healing. We, the Tong Ren practitioners, from the voodoo evolution to the science; you, the isolated so-called scientists, will revert back to voodoo by natural selection.

Hopefully someday you can observe us. Be a real scientist.
Let us work together and make the Tong Ren well known worldwide.
    Welcome to America.

    Thanks again.

    Del

    Hi Skepdude;

We really appreciate you for being more than fair regarding the scientific debate. You are the real one to follow the science law. You are open to let the people speak which makes you unique. It is too bad but we found another so called expert from a well known academic institute in the UK. We do not fear Friday the 13th but DBH from the UK fears the Voo Doo power of Tong Ren. He calls himself a scientist but he is acting like North Korean only one way he lets his views out but not letting comments in.

Hi! I am DBH, author of The Great DBH Rant, as well as the “North Korean” which Del was referring to. Came across this blog post and realised that my previous deconstruction of Tong Ren has touched a nerve or two. Fabulous.

I will echo skepdude’s sentiments. Fish out the evidence, and us skeptics will give it a fair shot. Remember though – anecdotes do not count as evidence.

Also the basic science behind the whole workings of Tong Ren would be welcome as well.

I find it funny that I was being accused of not letting comments in. My blog has always been open for comments, and Del Ivery has had more than a fair shot of leaving comments. I gave my rebuttal and nothing was heard since.

Oh and banging a doll does not cure anything. It is purely playing with the desperate nature of sick patients. Let them get proper medical help and don’t waste their time.
