Bill Donahue: If You Want to Spew Ridiculous Nonsense, Please Make a New, Relevant Argument

Posted in Enemy Combatant by Skepdude on November 14, 2008

Oh, crazy crazy Bill.

It’s absolutely nutjobs like you that make it pretty damn hard to imagine such a thing as a genuinely intelligent christian (or catholic).

Cool, we get it. You believe in god, you think everyone should, and you don’t like that those stupid meanie head atheists won’t play your game, and are putting signs on busses and not sitting down in their corner quietly, hiding and hoping you won’t notice them. We get it, dude.

However, you’d stand a fairer chance of convincing even one person who doesn’t already agree with you if you’d refrain from:

Insisting that we only pick on the christian faith. Stop that. The reason you see more actions targeting or specifying Abrahamic faiths is that they are prevalent in the society we live in. That makes them more relevant to the discussion. Dig? Cool? Got it? Gonna stop making that tired argument? I sure hope so.

Afternoon Delight With The Discovery Institute – #4

When Kate expressed her interest in the legalities of teaching ID, Casey’s beady eyes lit up as I imagine they might were he presented with proof of a creator. Like a toddler having just managed to make poopy in the toilet for the first time, he proudly exclaimed that he was a lawyer, and could really, really, honestly for reals tell us anything we wanted to know about the legal issues.

But first, since we were standing here, wouldn’t we like some handouts to take home with us? Some teaching guides, some books he just happened to co-author, maybe a pamphlet or six? Wouldn’t we like copies of several different versions of a thing called “Icons of Evolution”?

Would we EVER.

Afternoon Delight With The Discovery Institute – #3

Posted in Enemy Combatant by Skepdude on September 3, 2008

**Our last episode found Casey Luskin buying more of what we were selling than I’d have thought possible. Today we continue our tour, and things get what passes for interesting around there.**

After a couple more questions that were skirted or barely answered, our sparkly eyed and bushy browed guide seemed to be satisfied with our credentials both scientific and conservative. He then took the opportunity to inform us that science was his personal passion, and that he considers himself a scientist.

I’m waiting for my blue ribbon and gold medal to arrive for not dying of laughter at that point.

Afternoon Delight With The Discovery Institute – #2

**When we last left our heroes, they were half in the bag and thrilled to find that there was in fact a device to communicate with the life forms inside the Discovery Institute. **

Having discovered that there was an intercom, we did the logical thing and used it to page whoever might be listening in the building. A rather suspicious sounding young man answered, and Kate explained to him, in an awful parody of her usual soft southern accent, that she was here for a tour. She kept explaining, as the voice in the box didn’t seem inclined to let us in. Sensing that we might be turned away at the door without even a glimpse inside, I jumped in, and explained that my friend was a science teacher from Mississippi, who was passionate about intelligent design, and really had a lot of respect for the work the fine folks there at the Discovery Institute do every day.

The man in the box said he’d be right down.

Afternoon Delight With The Discovery Institute

**Repost**

**Note: This really ought to have been posted weeks ago, when I was fortunate enough to in fact, have a little bit of afternoon delight at the Discovery Institute.. But I’m lazy as hell. So. Here we are. **

I don’t know how many of you know what the Discovery Institute is. And I do mean what it is as opposed to what it purports to be. A quick refresher course can be found here.

If you’re reading this, I’m going to assume, for the sake of brevity, that you’ve got a decent idea of how it is I might feel about an organization such as that. So, when my good friend, Cuddly Atheist ,
suggested that during her visit to Seattle, it might be fun to pay them a visit and see about a little tour, I, when done giggling madly, got right to scheduling the visit. Or attempting to. I emailed them to see about a tour, but never received a response. I’m not sure if that’s because they are as incompetent at clerical duties as they are at debate, rational thought, and the interpretation of law, or if it’s because my email address fairly well identifies me as a godless liberal. Either way, no response was forthcoming.
