Turkey wedding massacre

Posted in News by Skepdude on May 6, 2009

As reported at

BILGE, Turkey, May 6 (UPI) — Turkish police arrested eight men suspected of a wedding party attack that killed 44 people, including the bride and groom, whose marriage the suspects opposed.

Women and children were among the victims of the 15-minute assault Monday in the town of Bilge in southeastern Turkey, Voice of America reported Wednesday.

Witnesses said men, armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades, opened fire on the 200 people attending the wedding.”

According to our first inspections, this happened because of a feud within the family,” Atalay said. “But our efforts to find out what happened are continuing.”

As reported at Times Online

The Hurriyet newspaper said that the chief suspect, Abdulkadir Celebi, told police: “We decided to exterminate all families there. We were also going to kill those who were not in the village at the time. If we did not kill everyone, including women and children, then they would have killed one of us in the future and there would have been a blood feud.

The suspect said that his side of the family had asked for Sevgi Celebi, whose father had been the village headman, to be given to them in marriage as penance for an earlier rape. “But they gave her to one of our enemies. We told them to cancel the engagement or else.”

Thank God…or Allah….or whoever you want to thank

Finally, this has been resolved. Let’s hope this is the beginning of some real change in Saudi Arabia. It still sucks that it all hinged on the father giving up his claim basically, but I guess we have to take what little scraps come our way.

Media reports say an arranged marriage between a Saudi girl aged eight and a man in his 50s has been annulled, in a case attracting worldwide criticism.

The Saudi Gazette says the divorce was agreed in an out-of-court settlement after a judge rejected two attempts to grant the girl a divorce.

The case prompted Saudi officials to say it would start regulating the marriages of young girls.

Rights groups say some Saudi families marry off young daughters for money.

The judge who first heard the case in the town of Unaiza refused to end the marriage at the request of the girl’s mother , but he stipulated the groom could not have sex with the girl until she reached puberty.

The girl’s father is said to have married her off against her mother’s wishes to a close friend in order that he could pay off a debt.

A new judge was appointed to oversee the case, who issued the annulment after the husband finally gave up his insistence that the marriage had been legal, reports say.

Woman blinded by acid wants same fate for attacker

Posted in News by Skepdude on February 19, 2009

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) — Ameneh Bahrami is certain that one day she’ll meet someone, fall in love and get married. But when her wedding day comes, her husband won’t see her eyes, and she won’t see her husband. Bahrami is blind, the victim of an acid attack by a spurned suitor.

If she gets her way, her attacker will suffer the same fate. The 31-year-old Iranian is demanding the ancient punishment of “an eye for an eye,” and, in accordance with Islamic law, she wants to blind Majid Movahedi, the man who blinded her.

“I don’t want to blind him for revenge,” Bahrami said in her parents’ Tehran apartment. “I’m doing this to prevent it from happening to someone else.”

Bahrami says she first crossed paths with Movahedi in 2002, when they attended the same university.

She was a 24-year-old electronics student. He was 19. She never noticed him until they shared a class. He sat next to her one day and brushed up against her. Bahrami says she knew it wasn’t an accident.

“I moved away from him,” she said, “but he brushed up against me again.”

When Bahrami stood up in class and screamed for him to stop, Movahedi just looked at her in stunned silence. He wouldn’t stay silent for long.

Bahrami said that over the next two years, Movahedi kept harassing her and making threats, even as he asked her to marry him. “He told me he would kill me. He said, ‘You have to say yes.’ ”

On a November afternoon in 2004, Movahedi’s threats turned to violence.

A Saudi judge has ordered a woman should be jailed for a year and receive 100 lashes after she was gang-raped, it was claimed last night.

The 23-year-old woman, who became pregnant after her ordeal, was reportedly assaulted after accepting a lift from a man.

He took her to a house to the east of the city of Jeddah where she was attacked by him and four of his friends throughout the night.

According to the Saudi Gazette, she eventually ‘confessed’ to having ‘forced intercourse’ with her attackers and was brought before a judge at the District Court in Jeddah.

He ruled she had committed adultery – despite not even being married – and handed down a year’s prison sentence, which she will serve in a prison just outside the city.

SKEPDUDE SAYS – I sentence the evil judge to Hell to be gang raped in his anus by Satanus and his minions. Oh and 100 fiery lashes of course. Stupid idiot!

An attractive 16-year-old Muslim teenager was stabbed to death 23 times by her elder brother “to protect the family’s honour” after he tricked her in to meeting him at a McDonald’s burger bar car park.

Dark haired Morsal Obeidi was the daughter of an Afghan jet fighter pilot who fled the country after the Taleban came to power.

Together with his wife and five children the father settled in Hamburg, Germany in 1994 where Morsal grew up.

But although she had no problems adjusting to life in a European city her brother Ahmad (24) continually got in to trouble with police.

By the time he had tricked her in to meeting him, Ahmad had 30 convictions for assault and burglary. These also included a conviction for attacking a man with a knife after a drunken night out.

It’s an injustice to NOT marry girls aged 10, says Saudi cleric

Posted in News by Skepdude on January 15, 2009

Ten-year-old girls are ready for marriage, according to Saudi Arabia’s most senior cleric.

Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al Sheikh, the country’s grand mufti, told Al Hayat newspaper that those saying ten or 12-year-old girls are too young to marry are being ‘unfair’ to them.

Al Sheikh’s comments come at a time when Saudi human rights groups have been pushing the government to put an end to marriages involving the very young and to define a minimum age for marriage.

In the past few months, Saudi newspapers have highlighted several cases in which young girls were married off to much older men or very young boys
